On Your Side Data Report May 2023 – Apr 2024

Welcome to the sixth release of incident report data from the On Your Side service. This report gives anonymised, aggregated information on the incidents reported to the On Your Side support and reporting service from 1st May 2023 – 30 April 2024. Numbers are rounded to the nearest multiple of 5 due to our data anonymisation process.

On Your Side incident reports

During this period we received reports of 275 incidents. Of those reports, 185 met our simple verification threshold.

This report gives anonymised, aggregated information on the incidents reported to the On Your Side support and reporting service from 1st May 2023 - 30 April 2024. Numbers are rounded to the nearest 5 due to our data anonymisation process.

For a report to meet the "verification" threshold the person reporting needs to speak with a helpline operator (over the phone or webchat) and provide their name, the incident location, the incident time and date, and a description of the incident.

The number of incidents we received spiked to 60 in October 2023, this can be attributed to the National Hate Crime Awareness Week social media and outreach campaign.

The median age of victims using the reporting service falls between 25 - 34

Police investigationCasework support

35 reports were passed to the police for investigation at request of the person reporting.


95 individuals were referred to partners for follow-up support from our trained casework advocates.


For other reports no follow up action or advice was requested or the reporting individual was signposted to external support.

In 60% of incidents the victims identified as or were reported to be female.

In 105 incidents the victim/s identified as or were reported to be Hongkonger, Hongkong British, or Hongkong other.


In 85 incidents the victim/s identified as or were reported to be Chinese, Chinese British or Chinese other.


In 15 incidents the victim/s identified as or were reported to be Japanese / Japanese British / Japanese other.

Of the incidents reported 130 included in-person verbal abuse or offensive language.

55 included a physical attack, 45 included discrimination, and 40 included harassment.
